EVENT HOST

Richard Shultis
Rich Shultis is originally from Kingston, NY (the first capital of New York) where he grew up as a small town kid with eight brothers and two step sisters.  Though getting started in the standup comedy world at a relatively advanced age, he quickly moved up through the ranks due to his vast life experience, hard work, professionalism and most importantly, his outrageously funny material.  Starting out at open mics in NYC and any other venue that would allow him to perform; Rich quickly caught the eye of club managers, owners, booking agents and producers.
In just a few short years he has become a regular at many of the major NYC comedy clubs including New York, Broadway, Laugh Lounge and Gotham.  He has also performed at venues throughout the country sharing the same stage with the likes of Jim Gaffigan, Dean Edwards, Ted Alexandro, Tom Shilue, Rich Voss, Joe Matarese and Dave Attell to name a few.  Rich has established himself as a reliable and professional comedian with the reputation of always bringing his “A” game.  Whether hosting, performing a guess spot or featuring, he can always be counted on to do a great job, leaving the audience in stitches and wanting more.

Doug Karpf - Comedy Knight Headliner 2

Doug Karpf is a quick witted comedian, known for his rapid punch lines and hilarious improvisations.  Much of his inspiration comes from being a father and husband living day to day in his native state of New Jersey.

Having mastered the skill of finding humor in everyday life, he brings an unmistakable charismatic presence to the stage that leaves viewers roaring with laughter and sharing with each other,“I know EXACTLY what he’s talking about!”. No matter his audience, he engages the crowd and always delivers laughs.

Doug performs at clubs across the country and has performed for the United States Armed Forces.  Doug’s credits include Rascal’s, Caesar’s, Resorts, Catch a Rising Star, Broadway Comedy Club just to name a few.

Doug received ECNY Best Host Nomination for Emerging Comics of New York.  He has made TV appearances on Comedy Central and spike TV.

Lord Carrett - Comedy Knight Headliner 1

Lord Carrett’s comedy is like an iceberg. There’s a lot that doesn't immediately meet the eye, both in the jokes themselves, and the way he puts them together.

He's a ‘recovery artist." Lord elaborates: "There are a whole lot of jokes that don’t have a set place in my act… they ‘float’—they're insults to the audience, or jokes about my own discomfort, or the situation I find myself in, and I fall back on them when a joke doesn’t get a response.”

The result is a little like watching a high-wire act nearly fall, and it holds the audience's rapt attention--it’s one reason people come to see him again and again. “It creates tension when a joke fails, and I use that tension to springboard onto an even bigger laugh with the ‘recovery’ line. It frees me up to work on new material, and to improvise, during every set.

"My detractors say I should lose the jokes that don't work... but no one can predict when a joke is going to fall flat. If a waitress drops a tray of drinks, or someone heckles, the best joke is going to fail. I prefer to have a 'Plan B' and audiences like the cat-and-mouse quality, because they never get the same show twice.”

One of Lord’s biggest influences, Johnny Carson, was famous for the same ability. Lord maintains: “Anyone my age that says they weren't influenced by Carson is lying.” His other influences include radio comedians Groucho Marx, and W.C. Fields, which seems fitting, because radio is where most people know Carrett from.

Lord’s managed the rare feat of headlining theaters without a sitcom or major television exposure. While he's appeared on television ranging from Showtime to"A Dating Story," radio is where he's made his reputation. His ability to work within that medium's verbal confines without sacrificing any of the impact led The Baltimore Sun to describe him as: "A cross between Sid Caesar and Sid Vicious.

The Prayer of Saint Michael

Saint Michael the Archangel, Defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.  May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the heavenly Host by the Divine Power of God cast into hell, Satan and all the evil spirits, who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.  Amen.

More than four in five Americans support major limitations on abortion, poll shows

BY DAVE ANDRUSKO
HT: Weasel Zippers
January 10, 2013, (National Right to Life News)—A new Marist poll conducted for the Knights of Columbus reveals that 83% of Americans favor significant limitations on what is now essentially abortion on demand. That is up 4 points from last year.

A total of 56% of respondents believe either that abortion should never be permitted (10%), allowed only to save the life of the mother (12%), or only in cases of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother (34%).

The telephone survey of 1,246 adults conducted in early December found that 27% would limit abortion to the first three months of pregnancy, at most.  Another 6% would allow abortion during the first six months of pregnancy while only 11% would allow abortion at any time.

Nearly 6 in 10 Americans (58%) also believe abortion is “morally wrong.”  And in many ways perhaps most important of all, a full 84% of Americans say laws can protect both mothers and unborn children.

“After four decades of legalized abortion in this country, Americans have had ample time to understand that abortion has terrible consequences,” said Knights of Columbus Supreme Knight Carl Anderson.

“They understand abortion’s true legacy – a child loses life, and parents lose a child. And after witnessing the effects of abortion for the past 40 years, Americans are not legally or morally comfortable with that legacy. It is time for our country to chart a new course on this issue – a course that protects both the mother and the child.”

Lee Miringoff of The Marist Poll observed,  “For years polls have found that Americans divide on labeling themselves as pro-life or pro-choice.” He added,  “By asking more detailed questions about their specific views on abortion, we have been able to go beyond those labels to get a more complete picture of what Americans actually think about this issue.”

KOCBM Call to Prayer

The Knights of Columbus at St. Rose of Lima parish in Newtown, Conn. have organized a prayer drive for the benefit of those affected by the town's recent tragedy.

...“There's a very important message, that the Rosary is a very powerful prayer, and one that can bring miracles. And we hope for that,...” Council 185’s Grand Knight, Tim Haas said in a Dec. 20 interview with EWTN News.  “This is a special way for us to remember the holy innocents who were lost. There were 12 little girls, 8 boys, and they were taken from us without warning or cause, and we need to pray for their families.”

The council's message promoting the prayer drive was released Dec. 19,...Within 24 hours, they had gathered over 60,000 Hail Mary prayers for the intentions of Newtown, CT.

The Newtown Knights are asking that those who participate say at least three Hail Mary prayers for three intentions: “ONE for the victims and their families, ONE for the first responders and teachers,  and ONE for the residence of Newtown giving them strength and to support the afflicted.”

Those praying are then invited to notify the council by e-mail at HailMary@kofc185.org, reporting the number of people praying, the number of prayers said and the location.

Plea for New Membership

To the Catholic Gentlemen of Holy Trinity,
As we move along our life path, there are moments that define us; they become an indelible part of our memory.  It could be a wedding, the birth of a child, the passing of a loved one, or something as simple as a holiday gathering.  These moments add to our lifetime experiences.  I would like to offer you a unique “Experience of a Lifetime”.
In September of this year, Holy Trinity formed a new Knights of Columbus council that will focus on our parish.  Our council is at the point of joining the many councils of the Hudson Valley.  We are in need of members to fill our ranks and reach a required membership minimum to be chartered.
There is no need to point out the obvious in our Poughkeepsie parish community; the past years have been of great difficulty for most of us.  Some of our parish families are struggling with financial difficulties due to unemployment or underemployment, serious health related issues, or families know of someone who is.  Our time is very precious and my asking our parish men to join a fraternal organization can appear to be a daunting commitment.  I assure you that this council is not looking to commandeer all of your personal time.  What I am offering is a fraternal place in the Knights of Columbus for every qualified man, whether you have a huge amount of time to volunteer or only a few hours a year. Regardless of what your interests are, the Order has something to offer you and your family.
For the 2012-2013 fraternal year, our immediate goal is to charter our council and begin working with our parish to make a difference in the lives of our current members, but it is also our goal to make a difference in the lives of potential members and their families by offering them the opportunity to be of service to our Church and to our community.
I am extending a personal invitation to all Holy Trinity parish gentlemen (ages 18 & older) to join the Knights of Columbus Bishop Mestice council in what will certainly be an “Experience of a Lifetime”.  Please feel free to contact me at any time or reach out to Father Robert (a Brother Knight) after mass.
Best regards,
Steven M. Apa

Membership in the Knights of Columbus

Membership in the Knights of Columbus is open to men 18 years of age or older who are practical (that is, practicing) Catholics in union with the Holy See. This means that an applicant or member accepts the teaching authority of the Catholic Church on matters of faith and morals, aspires to live in accord with the precepts of the Catholic Church, and is in good standing in the Catholic Church.

Catholic men 18 years of age or older who join the Knights belong to a council. Many 18 to 22 year olds first join the Knights of Columbus in a college council. Members who have been in the Knights for six months and have attained Third Degree membership are eligible to join the Fourth Degree Knights.
The Knights of Columbus also sponsors the Columbian Squires, a service and leadership training organization for Catholic young men ages 10 to 18 years old.
